Oil Change FAQs in Greer SC

Oil Change FAQs in Greer, SC

One of the most important parts of owning a car is having your vehicle’s oil changed regularly. This service is vital to your engine’s health and performance, but many drivers may not be aware of how important oil changes actually are. Over the years, our technicians here at D&D Motors have advised customers on the significance of this service (and how often it should be performed), and they’d be happy to chat with you, too! But for now, take a look at our list of frequently asked questions below to learn more about oil changes. And if you suspect that your Ford is ready for an oil change, make your service appointment online and we’ll see you soon!

What is an oil change?

When our technicians perform an oil change, they drain your vehicle’s dirty oil, replace the oil filter and then refill the oil tank with fresh motor oil. As a lubricant which keeps your engine from overheating by reducing friction (and helps to extend the life of your engine in the process), motor oil is a very important part of your Ford model’s overall performance.

Why are regular oil changes important?

If you wait too long between oil changes, your oil can run low, leaving your vehicle’s engine vulnerable to overheating or seizing up. Low oil can also cause a blown gasket, poor performance and even total engine failure, since, as oil gets dirtier, it becomes a useless sludge that can't help the powertrain stay cool or lubricated anymore. Schedule oil changes on time and your engine will thank you for regularly giving it clean oil.

How often should I change my car's oil?

We recommend checking your owner’s manual to find the oil change schedule that fits your model. However, our technicians often get this question, and they recommend having your oil changed every 5,000-7,000 miles if you use conventional oil. Those using synthetic oil may be able to go up to 15,000 miles between oil changes. However, if you notice that your oil is low or very dark, bring your vehicle in for an appointment as soon as possible (even if it’s not time for your next scheduled oil change).

What kind of oil should I select?

Check your owner’s manual to see what type of oil your model requires. There are three main types of oil: conventional, synthetic and synthetic blend. The oil’s weight and viscosity, as well as any additives it contains, will cause it to impact your engine in a specific way, as will your vehicle’s mileage and even the season. If you have any further questions about what type of oil your car needs, just ask our service technicians.

What if I'm not due for an oil change, but I notice some problems?

Between oil changes, keep an eye out for these warning signs — they indicate that something is wrong with your vehicle. Oil stains in the driveway may mean you have an oil leak, and if you suddenly see the oil warning light on your dashboard, you may have low oil pressure. You can top off your oil with a bottle from the store, but don’t wait long before bringing your vehicle in for service. Our technicians will flush your oil, change it out and conduct an inspection to see if your model has any further issues.
