Ford F 150 Lightning is Top for Fuel Efficiency

A Ford F 150 Lightning sits with its hood open to show off its large storage capacity.

The results are in for the ranking of this year’s most fuel-efficient Ford. The Ford F 150 Lightning is top of the list for fuel-efficient Fords. That may not be very surprising given the F-150 Lightning is the first 100% electric truck in the F-series line. Even if it’s abandoned traditional engines, the F-150 Lightning hasn’t abandoned the engineering that went into them. In many ways, it’s still the same kind of powerful and dependable vehicle Ford has become known for. We’ll be taking a closer look at the Ford F-150 Lightning and seeing what it offers beyond fuel efficiency.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning EV boasts a 300-mile range, a feat only challenged by the Mustang EV. Compare that to its closest conventional or hybrid challenger, the 2022 Maverick with 40 city mpg. With that large available range, you’d think it would sacrifice some of that famous Ford power and toughness. However, nothing could be further from the truth. The Ford F-150 Lightning manages to tread a careful line between power and dependability.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning in Detail

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning EV comes with a range of features. The F-150 Lightning comes with a Mega Power Trunk, Sync 4A, Ford Intelligent Backup Power, and BlueCruise hands-free driving. It has a targeted 563 horsepower (420 kW) and 775 lb.-feet of torque. It can hit 0 to 60 in the mid-4-second range. It boasts a 2000 lb. maximum payload and 10,000 lb. maximum towing capacity. Ford advertises the F-150 Lightning as a “truck 119 years in the making.”

As an extension of Ford’s F-series of pickup trucks, the F-150 Lightning is more than powerful enough to warrant that comparison. Many fans of the series might not even immediately realize the F-series traded in any power for this all-electric engine.

Comparing the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Lightning Pro

The Ford F-150 Lightning also has a specialized package in the Lightning Pro. The Pro is largely similar to the baseline F-150 Lightning with some additional features made standard. While it’s largely comparable to the F-150 Lightning EV in many ways, the Ford F-150 Lightning Pro boasts notable differences.

Like the baseline model, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro comes with dual electric motors (one for each axle). These offer 775 lb.-feet of instant torque whenever you’d need it most. With a standard range battery, it offers a maximum towing capacity of about 5000 lbs. That’s about half what the F-150 Lightning XLT offers but about average for the line as a whole.

It also comes standard with 4-wheel drive, a rear-view camera, and a class IV trailer hitch. In most of these regards, it’s very similar to the base F-150 Lighting EV. The Lighting Pro offers a slightly shorter range than the regular Lightning, at 230 miles standard range. That still puts it head and shoulders above most other competition.
